Paula's Choice Sale

It's a 20-50% off sale at Paula's Choice! One of my favorite things about her line is that she always has some sort of sale going and very often offers free shipping on all of her orders.

Here's what I picked up:

Lip and Body Treatment Balm. I've gone through two of these in as many months, and I will tell you that my severe dry hands have improved drastically. Before, I could have weeks of completely lovely hands, but I was using heavy-duty steroid creams that made my skin horribly thin. This balm does not work quite as fast as the steroids, and I have a bit of patchy dryness, but It has worked absolute wonders. I wish it came in larger tubs.

Cuticle & Nail Treatment. I have not tried this guy before, but I'm planning on taking it to work and alternating between this and the balm.

Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum. In your hand this looks like thick canola oil. On your face it is smooth and soothing and literally soaks into your skin within minutes. I wear it under my makeup and at night.

Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer. For my mom. This has an SPF of 25, which is fabulous, and it also contains titanium dioxide which protects against UVB rays.  Delivers protection with the punch of antioxidants.

Dark Circles

You look tired.

Yeah, that's because I'm not wearing makeup. No, I'm not sick. Yes, I'm getting enough sleep. I did just want to enjoy my day off, but now I'm totally self-conscious. Awesome.

Does this sound like your life? Then you probably have dark circles.

Don't worry, plenty of Pale Ladies have them, too:

Katherine Heigl

Keira Knightley

Have allergies (seasonal or otherwise)?

Consider taking a daily allergy pill containing an anti-histamine. Reactions to seasonal or environmental  allergens can cause puffiness (and therefore, shadows) under your eyes.

Get less than 8 hours of sleep a night?

Try to go to bed earlier a few days a week. Make a date to hit the sack just like you schedule luncheons or workouts. Being well-rested is good for your whole body including your mood.

Not wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15?

Why not? Seriously. We know have iPhones, Google, the microwave, and cars that turn on without a key; we know about sunscreen. Anything less than SPF 15 is a waste of your time and money. Choose one without fragrances or dyes and put it all over your face (there is absolutely no reason to have a separate 'eye cream'). Lather, rinse, repeat.

Have Pale skin?
Don't change it- it's beautiful. Just invest in a great concealer. When I say 'invest' I don't mean spend googobs of money, just read the ingredients and be smart.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Clinique 'All About Eyes' $16

Shiseido Natural Finish Cream Concealer $25

Revlon Age Defying Concealer $10
Cle de Peau Concealer $70

Note: Many formulas work better when set with loose powder. Personally, I find that powder makes my skin feel too dry, but see what works best for you. Like most things beauty- and fashion-related it's a matter of trial and error.

Apply concealer to spots and under eyes with a brush. The Non-Blonde is a totally insane crazy person (in the most amazing way) about makeup brushes. Check out her favorites here.

Fully Loded (Where My Geeks At)

I need one of my lovely nail-obsessed friends to try this. It looks brilliant and clever, yet tricky to execute. Apparently, you swipe on this polish then wave the be-magnetted cap over your nail and a seriously cool design appears.

I'm looking at you, ladyflash...

A Swedish Elderberry Kiss

I just saw images from Vogue Sweden's featuring Frida Gustavsson in a 1940's-inspired shoot. It is amazing. Apart from her obvious beauty and killer bone structure, I was totally taken by the gorgeous shade of plum gracing her lips. She looks like a little Swedish milk maid who's just bitten into some freshly picked Elderberries.

On it's own, this shade could make her look like a goth Camden Town Chick. But the supporting colors chosen for these looks are petal pink, charcoal gray, burgundy, iris blue, and mint green. Flawless.

I'm picking up these lipsticks to see if I can match the look:

Smashbox Marvelous

Dior Addict Perfecto No. 991
I remember reading a positive review for this one on The Non Blonde. She loved it, so I will most definitely be giving it a try.
YSL Rouge Volupte No. 22 Exquisite Plum

Miss Fix-It

Karen Gillan

Oh, girl.

Girl.

Your skin? Flawless.

Your hair? A lovely shade of ginger (and we all know how I feel about gingers).

 Might I suggest two things:

Cat-Eyes Worthy of a Star

Amy Winehouse
Winged eyeliner is a great makeup technique. In a world of shading, blending, and smudging, a little flick of liquid liner is a simple and glamorous touch.

It also looks fabulous on The Pale. As I'm not super talented at the aforementioned blending and such, The Cateye is a look I do often. So, in honor of the incomparable Miss Amy, I will show you how I do my famous liquid liner.

I typically choose a liner with a felt tip, like Hourglass Calligraphy Liner, Chantecaille 'Le Stylo', or Lancome 'Artliner'. You can also use an eyeliner brush and gel liner. I've even done this look with a very sharp kohl pencil.

I've tried a million techniques and the one I have found that works is using a Lines and Angles technique to create the framework of the Wing. Then, I just fill in my shapes. If you want a more Glam look, you should apply your eyeshadow before using your eyeliner. I've taken these pictures with a bare eye.

Draw a thin line as close to your lashes as possible. Don't worry if your line is wobbly; you will clean it up later.

Open your eye, and hold your liner against the corner of your eye at the angle at which you'd like to make your Wing. I like to use a 45 degree angle.

Draw down to and not up from the corner of your eye. Starting at the corner and working down gives you a sharper point and will help you make each Wing the same angle.

See? My lines are wobbly. I have a pretty steady hand, but I don't worry about cleanliness so much at this stage. I'm just created the framework of the Wing and will fill everything in later.

Now, draw down from the tip of the Wing to the horizontal line at your lashes. You can create a very thick Wing, like Amy's, by aiming for the middle of your eyelid. For a thinner Wing, aim for a spot close to the corner of your eyelid.

This is what I mean about Lines and Angles. I have created a scalene triangle at the corner of my eye.

Now, fill in the triangle and smooth out your wobbles.

When you do your other eye, look at where the point of your first Wing ended. Mine is close to the tip of my eyebrow, so I will draw my line down from this point on the other eye. This takes away the problem of having your Wings pointing in different directions which is, arguably, the most challenging part of a Cateye.

Play around with it. Use different products, and experiment with making your Wings longer or shorter, thicker or thinner. Add some red lipstick or sheer pink lipgloss. Your options are fairly limitless, so check out how these Ladies of Pale choose to wear their Wings:
Taylor Swift
A shimmery eyeshadow and pretty pink gloss give her Cateye a youthful edge.

Katy Perry
Heavy brows, tons of eyelashes and nude lips.

Dita von Teese
Blue-based red lipstick and 1940's waves.

Candice Swanepoel
All-American Girl with gentle waves and peaches 'n cream complexion.

Alexa Chung
A minimalist look that emphasizes her already lovely almond-shaped eyes.

For this demo I used Lancome's 'Artliner' in 'Forest'.

Things That Shouldn't Work, But Do

Of all the beauty website and blog owners on the internets, Janice from Specktra.net is pretty much the authority when it comes to MAC. So when she insisted the orangey-tanny-colored 'Saffron' eyeshadow from MAC's Surf Baby! collection would work on me, I listened.

I'll admit I was scared. And to scare me away from color is no mean feat, but this just looked so...orange. And I love orange, I have just never entertained the thought of putting it on my eyes outside of October 31st.

Opening the pan, I was immediately transported back to the time David Hasselhoff (I KNOW) left smears of fake tanner all over my white seats when I was working as a tour guide in Hawaii. Not a necessarily unpleasant experience, but I don't think one needs to associate The Hoff with one's eye shadow.

It actually turned out rather well:

It is...not horrifying. In fact, it is rather flattering. In the pan this shade just looks odd to me but on my skin it does actually enhance the color of my eyes (just as Janice said it would).

Saffron is a Satin, which means that it blends and applies very smoothly and has a slight sheen to its finish (like flat paint versus eggshell).

I blended Saffron with Lancome's Honeymoon (a pale cream-colored shimmer), made a baby cat-eye with Lancome's Le Crayon Khol in Black Ebony, and finished with Lancome's Virtuose Black Carat Mascara. Brows filled in with Anastasia's Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde.

Great Skin: Miracle Product?

Tiiu Kuik

Countless beauty products are often touted as being 'miracles'.

They can lift your jawline, close your pores, airbrush your forehead, and send you Jon Hamm wrapped in ribbons.

But we all know, somewhere deep in that part of our brains known as the "logic center" (or, "that-place-we-ignore-because-it's-such-a-buzzkill"), that these products do not work as claimed, often because their claims are simply preposterous.

Fortunately for us, there is one product that does work miracles. A product that can smooth your skin, decrease wrinkles, increase collagen, heal photo-damage, fade discoloration, and make all of your other products work better. The product in question really can do all that. It's called...

...Retinol...

The whole Vitamin A molecule is known as Retinol and it is broken down in to smaller pieces known as retinoic acids. Retinol is one of the few substances that has molecules small enough to penetrate the first few layers of skin and actually enter the collagen and elastin layer. Simply put, Retinol is essential for health skin cell function.

There are just a few things to keep in mind when using products containing retinoic acids.

First, only apply to dry skin. Applying a retinoid to damp skin causes it to absorb faster and increases the risk of irritation. Wash your face with a mild cleanser, pat dry, and then go brush your teeth or make your coffee. When you come back, you can then use your retinoid.

Second, start slow. There is a period of time in which your skin adjusts to the effects of Retinol. You will most likely have mild peeling and a bit of sensitivity. This is normal. Choose the lowest percentage of retinol and then work your way up.

Third, use an SPF of at least 15. Every day. Retinol can increase your sun sensitivity so protect yourself. And, honestly, if you don't already use an SPF of 15+ on your face every day then you are just being silly. You know the risks and effects of the sun. You do not live under a rock. Get with it.

**Note** Retinol and retinoic acids are sensitive to oxidation so they should always be packaged or stored in an opaque tube or bottle. Do not buy retinoids in jar packaging.

Some of the best:

TxSystems Afirm
Alpha Hydrox Retinol ResQ
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream
Olay Pro-X Deep Wrinkle Treatment
Serious Skin Care A-Force XR

Great Skin: What is it and How do I get it? Part II

Exfoliation

Remember St. Ives Apricot Scrub? Remember how we all had it sitting in our bathrooms next to our bottle of Curve? Yeah, me too.

Apricot Scrub is okay. It's not Awesome, because it can be pretty abrasive and it is really not any better than using a washcloth and a mild cleanser. Plus, it is not good for acne. Blackheads? Maybe. Actual blemishes? No way.  You know when you have a cut or sore on the inside of your mouth and you just Cannot. Leave. It. Alone? Yeah, using a scrub on top of red, swollen acne blemishes is essentially the same. You are just irritating the surrounding tissue and inhibiting healing.

Something else that does not make me crazy about scrubs? You cannot get them anywhere near your eyes. Conversely, there's really no place your washcloth can't go. Basically, whether it's to do with fashion, beauty, or otherwise, I just don't like to feel limited. Scrubs are limiting.

Ones of the Magic Keys to great skin is Exfoliation. The point is to remove dead skin cells, dirt, and makeup and also to increase cell turnover. It also increases circulation and fades wrinkles and discoloration. Exfoliation gets all the gunk out of the way so that your skincare products will work better. There are two types of exfoliation: manual and chemical. I have already written ad nauseum about the benefits of using a washcloth, so let's skip to chemical exfoliation.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid or AHA
The same as glycolic, citric, and lactic acids, AHAs penetrate the skin to increase cell turnover. They increase collagen production and are especially effective on sun-damaged skin.

Best Products containing AHAs:

derma e AHA Beauty Fluid

Olay Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir
Paula's Choice RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment
Beta Hydroxy Acid or BHA
The same as salicylic acid, BHAs reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and shrink pores. BHAs break down in oxygen, so make sure you do not purchase products that utilize jar packaging.

Best Products containing BHAs:
Cosmedicine Speedy Recovery Daytime Blemish Lotion SPF 15
Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion

Neutrogena Oil-Free Stress Control 3-in1 Hydrating Acne Treatment
